With 2013 long gone and the new movie year upon us, I took time to compile a list of what I think are the years great films.
I’ve sat in a cinema 91 times this year, not counting home viewing and I can say we have had a fantastic year. Like in most years the true quality comes in the second half, more so the last three months. 2013 started like always, with a slew of bad movies. Gangster Squad, Broken City, Bullet to the Head and Parker are just to name a few. Studio dumping ground is what I call that magical time of year between January and March were the big boys get rid of the garbage that is cluttering up their shelves. Then we get April to about July that promises big, loud and dumb. Fast and Furious 6, Star Trek: Into Darkness, Iron Man 3 and Man of Steele — in short, the money season. August is an amalgam of stupid and smart. Stupid being trash like We’re the Millers, smart being Lee Daniels’ The Butler.
As soon as September hits we get a barrage of good stuff until December. As much as I look forward to these few months, I get angry that studios get award hungry. I mean, you have 12 months to release good movies but you limit yourself to about 90 days. We have had so many movies open one right after the other; it’s almost impossible for one person to see them all. I’ll just say, thank goodness my wife has patience.
Here are, well what I think are, the ten best films of 2013. They might not be the best to you but for me, they took me on a heck of an emotional ride.
10) Captain Phillips
9) Blue Jasmine
8) Lee Daniel’s The Butler
7) Lone Survivor
6) Nebraska
5) Dallas Buyers Club
4) Her
3) Philomena
2) The Wolf of Wall Street
1) Rush
Here’s to 2014. Hope the quality is as good as 2013.
