What a sad day. One of our greatest character actors has died.
Philip Seymour Hoffman was one of our finest stage and screen actors. His range was incredible. He could pull off funny, tragic, evil and loveable without batting an eye. Who can forget his oscar winning turn in Capote? His booming, rumbly voice made high to sound like Truman Capote was only the start. He was the man himself, down to every gesture. What about his turn as the accused priest in Doubt? The man blew his costars out of the water and to do that to Meryl Streep and Amy Adams is no small feat. And just last year, the man entered blockbuster territory with his turn in sequel to the Hunger Games. His presence as the new game master upped the ante for the film’s quality. Boogie Nights, The Master, The Savages, The Ides of March are just some other titles that Hoffman made better. What an actor. What a blow.
