Tina Fey’s hilarious hit musical Mean Girls is headed to Place-des-Arts

It’s been over 20 years since Tina Fey’s cult classic Mean Girls hit the big screen, leaving audiences with highly quotable pop-culture references and a lasting affection for five strong female frenemies just trying to find their place in an American high school.

Now the movie has been turned into a musical—updated and scored by none other than Fey’s composer husband, Jeff Richmond. With tunes that will get audiences toe-tapping and clapping along and the same wit and perceptiveness of the original movie, Mean Girls has taken Broadway by storm and is headed to Place-des-Arts from April 22 to 27.

Catch an updated Cady Heron—newly arrived in suburban Illinois after being home-schooled in Kenya—along with outcasts Janis Ian and Damian Leigh, plus the Plastics trio Regina George, Gretchen Wieners, and Karen Smith.

Against a popping pink background, the high schoolers revel in costume changes along with all the drama of friendship, rivalry, self-reflection, and revenge—where Cady learns that you can’t cross a Queen Bee without getting stung. And Gretchen finds she still can’t make Fetch happen.

In an interview with BBC, Fey spoke about needing to take the musical out of the aughts an into today’s teen world, where the way high schoolers speak and interact with one another is different from when the movie was originally released.

The result is a cast of characters who are just as well loved—even elevated, thanks to the Broadway layering of live theatre, set changes, catchy hits, and the magic of the stage.

Head down to see the hilarious results for yourself.
