Curtains Up on The Huntsman: Winter’s War

I understand it’s called show business. I get it. But making a sequel to a film that no one really remembers is just plain dumb. And the movie sucks too.  If I want to see actors waste their talents, I’d watch Dancing with the Stars.

The Huntsman: Winter’s War is a black mark on everyone involved.   While the first one, Snow White and the Huntsman was an entertaining video game like film based on the Snow White story, this dosen’t know what it wants to be. It has action that is poorly done, effects that are over embellished, romance that does not fizzle and an Ice Queen that mirrors Frozen ( nice touch, as if to drag in young girls to this violent mess).

This isn’t just a sequel, it is also a prequel. The evil queen Ravenna (Charlize Theron) ruthlessly ascends the throne and rules the land with an iron fist. You want to know how evil she is?  She can’t stand that fact the her younger, nicer, sister Freya (Emily Blunt) is happy and so much in love with her family that she kills her newborn child.  This causes Freya to become an evil Ice witch  (or whatever) who now hates the idea of love and happiness. She soon rules the northern part of the kingdom in the same fashion as her sister and recruits child warriors to form an army. One of these children happens to be Eric, the Huntsman ( soon to be Chris Hemsworth). He is madly in love with another warrior Sarah (soon to be Jessica Chastain) and since love is forbidden, things do not really end well for these two at this point.

The movie then cuts to after the events of the first where an unseen Snow White (smart movie Kristen Stewart) enlists the grown up Huntsman to find Ravenna’s magic mirror. Freya is also on the hunt for the mirror, which will help her take back her sisters kingdom. Queue the hordes of CG beasts and armies that we have seen many times over in The Hobbit, The Lord of The Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia and the never ending trailers for the summer computer fest, World of War Craft. This is nothing special. If you want to see the worst of Hollywood, check this out.
