Abby E. Schachter for Curtains Up
One Night only Theatre production of CHESS Saturday April 25th at La Vitrola
If you are looking for something to do this Saturday April 25th, look no further.
In The Wings Promotions is presenting their very own version of the hit musical CHESS. And it is a one night only production.
A story made popular back in the mid-eighties has made a full comeback in popularity. The story is about dueling chesters—probably not a word but I am sticking with it. The songs were written /composed by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus of ABBA fame and Tim Rice. The BBC Radio 2 listener poll even voted the show as one of U.K’S “Number One Essential Musicals.” So you can expect to hear some fan favorites like One Night in Bangkok.
Noelle Hannibal a L.A native who moved to our Franglaise city for love (aww) is the woman behind the production. She is also playing the female lead in Chess. Usually you hear of out of work actors leaving the city for L.A and not the other way around. Hannibal says she knew what she was doing at the time and is content with her decision to leave Hollywood.
“What can I say? I was a working actor in L.A but then I fell in love… So I decided to leave L.A and live in Montreal with my husband. That was a choice I made. It doesn’t mean I no longer want to act. If I didn’t have this (theatre projects) I would go crazy!”
Hannibal has a pretty exciting resume; she has worked on some popular sets. From Star Trek: First Contact and Star Trek: Voyager- she was the very first lady Vulcan roaming the earth; to a Demoness in Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Velma Kelly in Chicago and the voice of Sheila in South Park among many others. Guess what? She is nice and completely humble too… don’t you hate her?
“Sometimes you just have to create your own opportunities. Especially in this city…” Hannibal is one of those rare breeds of people who ignore obstacles. This go -getter woman produces the shows she acts in and for good reason. Montreal is a difficult city in regards to nearly everything having to do with the arts. Paycheck* is not part of the Montreal Artists vocabulary.
“You have to be willing to make things happen.” She is one hundred percent right. Waiting around for something to happen will get you nowhere. Hannibal says that sometimes she gets some sass from other actors who perhaps want a starring role in one of her productions.
“I am kind of known for starting up projects mainly because I need and want to act and sing. I am creating roles for myself because it is really hard to find work in this city.” And she is from L.A! These thespians should take note, if you want something badly enough sometimes you just have to go the DIY (Do it yourself) route. Which is a very punk rock frame of mind; if no one will sponsor or pay you …Well then you can always just do it on your own! So what are you waiting for Montreal ? Go out and support local talent and treat yourself to a night of light’s, cameras, action and singing!
