James Horner, one of cinema’s leading composers, has passed away.
I’m in shock. I get a tweet an hour ago saying that James Horner, one of my favorite film composers, is gone. He passed away in a tragic plane crash.
Horner is best known for his Oscar winning work on James Cameron’s mega blockbuster Titanic. Of course his score was memorable, but there was so much more then that specific piece of film music. His best musical year was 1995 when he was the composer on Mel Gibson‘s epic Braveheart and Ron Howard’s space drama Apollo 13. Both are very different films and Horner provided two scores that are so different, so distinct and so beautiful that the academy split the vote and went with someone else. But who cares. His legacy will go on. Just listen to the moody, tense score for Aliens, the sweet and soulful tracks for Field of Dreams and his rousing and heartfelt work for Glory. These are just some of the masterworks in this man’s legacy.
The film industry has lost a true artist.
