REVIEW: “Zack Adams” charms as a hilarious comedy of dedications and memorable encounters

Returning to the St-Ambroise Montreal Fringe Festival this year, Aussie comedian Shane Adamczak is bringing back his well-known character Zack Adams, who has been a known character on the Canadian fringe festival circuit since 2006. Celebrating the 10th anniversary of “Zack Adams: Love Songs for a Future Girl”, Shane is reviving the very funny production once again for this year’s Montreal Fringe.

A one-man comedy, featuring only Adamczak and his guitar, Shane has written a series of songs performed by his character, “Zack Adams” recounting his love for different “Laras” (every woman he’s loved in this story, being referred to as a “Lara”, to keep some anonymity) in his life.

Following the outstanding success of The Ballad of Frank Allen (performed alongside former Montreal-based actor Al Lafrance), which was awarded the Just for Laughs Frankie award for Best Comedy (2017), this solo 10-year anniversary remount of Zack Adams: Songs for a Future Girl is a charming and hilarious solo addition to this year’s Fringe programming.

Throughout the show, Shane features bits of well-known 90’s and 2000’s pop songs (which the audience can’t help but join in on singing with Adamczak), used to describe some of the girls he’s fallen in love with, in addition to many of his own very funny songs. For audiences who have seen Zack Adams: Love Songs for a Future Girl at a past fringe festival, it is still definitely worth seeing again, as there have been brand new songs and material added to the show, in addition to the classics from its first early performances.

Having been in the audience for the first performance of Zack Adams: Love Songs for a Future Girl in the Montreal Fringe festival, the performer had many spontaneously hilarious moments as he admits forgetting parts of songs, while digging them out of his memory in rehearsals, from ten years ago. Many songs, Adamczak admits, have changed or been altered since the first time he’s performed this show in Montreal, but the show is still an hour of laughs and charming recollections of relationships with various women.

Described as a cross between a rock concert and group therapy, Zack Adams: Love Songs for a Future Girl is a comedic yet heart-wrenching show, talking about love, loss, being dumped, bad facial hair and so much more.

Writing and producing a new solo musical comedy can always be difficult to pull off, when a performer lacks either good comedic content and material, or musical ability. Shane Adamczak in Zack Adams: Love Songs for a Future Girl has mastered both, creating a show that doesn’t miss a beat or opportunity to fully entertain audiences from start to finish.

Nominated for two 2019 Frankies – Best English Comedy and Best Visual Identity, Zack Adams: Love Songs for a Future Girl is recommended as a must-see for any 18+ Fringe-goer this weekend.

Zack Adams: Love Songs for a Future Girl is playing at the Petit Campus, until June 16 as part of the Montreal Fringe Festival. For more information and tickets check out www.montrealfringe.ca, or call 514-849-FEST
